Fly Fishing for Largemouth Bass
Every type of bass fishing offers its own rewards. Many anglers are moving away from heavy lines and large lures, choosing to fish for bash using fly fishing instead.
Advantages of fly fishing
Fly fishing gives the bass angler a chance to imitate virtually all types of bass food, through choice of nymphs or dry flies. Conventional bass fishing uses large lures, which only imitate a small number of food sources. But you're not limited to small bait: fly fisherman sometimes cast out mice and frogs, and other food sources that these opportunistic feeders eat. Fly fishing also allows more accurate placement, to that you can drop the lure into shallow water, where the bass are hiding under or near logs or in weeds. Fly casters can place their offering quietly without spooking skittish fish.
Techniques:
Early in the morning is a good time to fish the banks with steamers in one to three feet of water, where the bass cruise actively looking for fish to eat. You can try casting out Woolly Buggers, Woolly Worms, Muddler Minnows, and even try a leech pattern or two.
In cool Spring weather (April for example) in the afternoon you would still be able to fish from shore using floating bass bugs. This makes bass fly fishing fun! Cast the fly toward a nice looking bass hiding spot, and let it sit for a few seconds. Try to "pop" the fly upon landing to entice the bass to inhale your offering. Your rod tip needs to be at the proper angle to absorb the hit, or you won't be able to hook your prey.
If the "hit" doesn’t occur after a few seconds, start retrieving your fly at irregular intervals like would happen in nature. This "popping" action will attract the bass. Watch for the wake as the great bass often will approach aggressively. For trout anglers, remember that the bass’s mouth is huge.
Flies:
Bass are opportunistic carnivores with huge mouths, and they will eat nearly anything. You can try the usual bass bugs that float like the Frog, and the Mouse Rat. Also worth trying are the divers, which float and then sink when you retrieve them, like the Dahlberg divers. Add to your tacklebox streamers, like the Woolly Buggers, and Clouser minnows. For hot days or big reservoirs, you will want to fish deeper water with sculpins and leeches.
